A journalist on a motorcycle plays a unique and dynamic role in covering cycling races. As the riders move through landscapes, villages and towns, the journalist is quite literally in the middle of the action. This provides a perspective that few other reporters have: right up close to the race, surrounded by the sound and intensity of the peloton.

The journalist usually sits on the back of an experienced motorcyclist who specialises in following cycling events. Together, they form a highly coordinated team. The rider must be able to anticipate how the race unfolds and move safely among the cyclists, while the journalist focuses on observing and reporting. Trust between the two is essential, as they often operate in fast-paced and unpredictable conditions.

What makes this job so distinctive is the direct access to riders and race situations. The journalist can closely follow breakaways, observe riders’ reactions, and sometimes even exchange brief words with them during calmer moments. This proximity allows for vivid and authentic reporting, giving the audience a genuine insight into what is happening on the road.

Communication plays a central role. The journalist is in constant contact with the production team or studio via an earpiece. He or she provides updates on the race situation, reports key developments and describes the atmosphere in the peloton. This often requires quickly switching between observation, analysis and speaking on air, demanding strong mental agility.

A sharp eye for detail is also essential. Small signs can indicate major changes: a rider touching their earpiece, a team suddenly moving to the front, or a shift in pace. It is the journalist’s job to pick up on these cues and turn them into clear and engaging information for the audience.

Working conditions are not always easy. Rain, wind, heat or cold can all make the job more difficult. In addition, races often last several hours, requiring significant stamina. The journalist must remain focused and clear-headed despite fatigue and challenging conditions.

Safety is also a major concern. The motorcycle moves close to the riders and other vehicles, which involves risks. The journalist must hold on securely, maintain balance, and perform their duties at the same time. It is a constant balance between immersion in the race and maintaining awareness of safety.

What makes this role so compelling is the intensity of the experience. The journalist feels the tension of the race, hears the crowd’s support and experiences the speed up close. These impressions are then translated into storytelling, allowing the audience to almost experience the race from within.

Thanks to motorcycle journalists, cycling coverage gains an extra dimension. They do not only deliver facts, but also emotion, atmosphere and first-hand stories. Their work transforms simple reporting into an immersive and captivating sporting experience.
