The Tour de France, or simply the Tour, is regarded as the most important and prestigious stage race of the year. In this annual competition of around 21 stages, riders compete for the yellow jersey. The cyclist who finishes first in the overall classification after the final stage in Paris earns the honour of wearing the highly coveted yellow jersey on the podium. The best sprinter wears the green jersey, the best climber the polka dot jersey, and the best young rider the white jersey.
The stages take riders over flat terrain as well as steep mountain climbs in the Alps and the Pyrenees.
