The The yellow jersey is the shirt worn by the leader of the general classification in the Tour de France.

Henri Desgrange is the founder of the Tour de France. He constantly sought to make the race more attractive while also increasing revenue for his newspaper L’Auto. One way to make the race more engaging was the introduction of a leader’s jersey, so the overall leader could be easily recognized. The first yellow jersey was awarded during the 1919 Tour. Its first wearer was Eugène Christophe. The first overall winner to wear the jersey in Paris was Firmin Lambot. The color yellow was chosen because L’Auto, the organizing newspaper, was printed on yellow paper. Winning a yellow jersey is a great honor for many riders, even if they do not go on to win the overall classification.

After the introduction of the yellow jersey for the general classification, other jerseys were added over time. The polka dot jersey was introduced for the leader of the mountains classification, the green jersey for the points classification, and the white jersey for the best young rider. Later, other major stage races such as the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España also introduced leader’s jerseys.

In 1935, Romain Maes won the Tour de France and wore the yellow jersey every day of the race. In 1961, Jacques Anquetil achieved the same feat. The record holder is Eddy Merckx, who wore the yellow jersey a record 96 times during his career.

However, the yellow jersey has not always brought good fortune. The first wearer, Eugène Christophe, was not happy with it, as he believed it made him too easy to identify for his rivals.

• In 1937, the Belgian team refused to start a few stages before Paris in protest against what they considered biased officiating. This was unfortunate for Sylvère Maes, who was wearing the yellow jersey and would almost certainly have won the Tour.
• In 1950, Fiorenzo Magni left the race while wearing yellow after incidents with spectators, followed by the entire Italian team.
• In 1951, Wim van Est crashed into a ravine during the descent of the Col d’Aubisque while in yellow and had to abandon.
• In 1971, Eddy Merckx refused to wear the yellow jersey after Luis Ocaña, then the race leader, crashed heavily and abandoned.
• In 1980, Bernard Hinault abandoned the race after a time trial in Pau, having taken the yellow jersey earlier that day. Joop Zoetemelk refused to start in yellow the following day.
• In 1983, Pascal Simon broke his shoulder blade while wearing yellow but continued racing for several days.
• In 1998, Chris Boardman crashed heavily while in yellow and had to abandon with a concussion.
• In 2007, Michael Rasmussen won a mountain stage in the yellow jersey but was expelled from the race due to doping allegations.
• In 2015, Fabian Cancellara crashed while wearing yellow and broke several vertebrae, forcing him to leave the Tour. In the same Tour, Tony Martin broke his collarbone while in yellow and also had to withdraw. Chris Froome, who was due to take over the jersey, chose not to wear it in the following stage.
