Flandria was a Belgian cycling team from the period '60 and '70, sponsored by the Belgian cycling and motor cycle brand with the same name. In 1959 Flandria was founded by the director of Flandria Pol Claeys. Marcel Janssens was the most successful cyclist. Also Briek Schotte, who was already 40 years old, was a rider that year in the team that consisted of only Belgian riders.

From the year 1960 it was Joseph Planckaert who was the most important cyclist. In that period also foreigners came to the team for example the Swiss René Strehler. In the year 1962 champion Rik Van Looy rode for the team, which that year merged with Faema. At that time, Flandria-Faema was the team that had the biggest successes.

Van Looy triumphed in Ghent-Wevelgem and Paris-Roubaix. Planckaert was the best in the Ardennes in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. In total, the team achieved 129 victories that year. At Flandria many great cyclists were racing. The best known were: Michel Pollentier, Eric Leman, Joop Zoetemelk, Roger De Vlaeminck, Erik De Vlaeminck, Rik Van Looy, Freddy Maertens, Walter Godefroot and Jean-Pierre Monseré from Roeselare. The team director was Briek Schotte for a long time.

In 1979 the company Flandria went bankrupt, and then the cycling team disappeared.

One of the successful riders in the team was Freddy Maertens. He won the greatest races in the Flandria shirt. Maertens was one of the best sprinters of his generation. Together with teammates Michel Pollentier and Marc Demeyer, Maertens formed a trio in the 70's that won many races.

He participated 3 times in the Tour de France. He won fifteen stages and had the yellow jersey around his shoulders for 9 days. 3 times he won the green jersey for the points classification. Maertens is the rider who has the record of the most victories in 1 Vuelta and 1 Tour de France. In the Vuelta of 1977 he performed something very special. He was the leader of the general classification from start to finish. Besides the general classification he also won the points classification and 13 of the 19 stages.

After his racing career he worked as a representative, and as a worker in the Cycling Museum in Roeselare. Later the museum was renamed Koers, the centre of cycling. In 2010 he was elected best West-Flemish cyclist of all time before Briek Schotte and Johan Museeuw.
