Wout van Aert is one of the most versatile and successful cyclists of his generation. The Belgian rider is known for his exceptional mix of strength, technique and endurance. He performs at a very high level in several cycling disciplines: cyclo-cross, one-day classics, Grand Tours and time trials. Because of this versatility, he is often regarded as one of the most complete riders in modern professional cycling.

Early life and first successes
Wout van Aert was born on 15 September 1994 in Herentals and grew up in Lille, an area with a strong cyclo-cross tradition. From a young age it was clear that he had a special talent for cycling. He started racing in cyclo-cross and quickly impressed in the junior categories.
His big breakthrough came in cyclo-cross. Van Aert became world champion three times at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, winning the elite title in 2016, 2017 and 2018. During those years he had many memorable battles with his great rival Mathieu van der Poel. Their rivalry became one of the most talked-about duels in modern cycling and attracted many new fans to cyclo-cross.

Moving to road racing
Although Van Aert achieved early success in cyclo-cross, he gradually focused more on road racing. His talent proved to be just as impressive on the road. In 2019 he joined the Dutch team Team Jumbo-Visma, now known as Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
In that same year he immediately achieved major results. He won a stage in the Tour de France and also a time trial in the Critérium du Dauphiné. He is also a regular contender in the famous Flemish classics. In 2022 he won the prestigious Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and later that year the E3 Saxo Classic. He has also achieved several podium finishes in major races such as the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix.
His strength on cobbles, his powerful sprint and his strong time trial ability make him one of the most complete classics riders of his generation.

Success in Grand Tours
Although Van Aert is not a rider who usually competes for the overall classification, he plays an important role in Grand Tours. He has especially impressed in the Tour de France. He has won several stages there, including sprint stages, mountain stages and time trials – a rare achievement that shows his remarkable versatility.
In 2022 he had one of his best Tours ever. He won three stages and convincingly secured the green jersey in the Points classification in the Tour de France. During that Tour he also played a key role supporting his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, who went on to win the overall classification.
Van Aert is known as a rider who can chase his own victories but is also willing to work selflessly for his team. This makes him extremely valuable to his squad.

Time trials and other strengths
In addition to his abilities as a classics rider and sprinter, Van Aert is also an excellent time trial specialist. He has won several important time trials, including stages in the Tour de France and other major races. His aerodynamic position, power and pacing make him one of the best time trial riders in the professional peloton.
